THE man who was Wychavon District Council’s first chief executive has died at the age of 76. Pat Rust, MBE, joined the council in 1973 for its launch the following year. During his time at the council and, as the District’s Returning Officer, he was invited to Zimbabwe to observe the elections there. He took early retirement in 1990 when Tony du Sautoy took the helm. By this time he had clocked up 47 years in local government – starting with a post of acting temporary junior clerk in Gloucester Borough Council. “Pat had a remarkable career in local government where he achieved so much,” said Wychavon’s managing director Sid Pritchard. “Staff and members still at the council who worked with him are deeply saddened at the news of his death and our thoughts go out to his family at this time.” Mr Rust had suffered from Parkinson’s disease. His funeral is to was held on Monday morning, August 11, at Elmley Castle Church, near Pershore, with a service of thanksgiving at 3pm.

Wychavon DC has agreed to release its chief executive, Tony du Sautoy, from his contract early so that he can take …Wychavon DC has agreed to release its chief executive, Tony du Sautoy, from his contract early so that he can take up a new position. Mr du Sautoy has been appointed as the first head of the new unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset which comes into existence next April. He will take up the post on October 2. Mr du Sautoy, 49, has previously worked for local authorities in Tower Hamlets, Bedfordshire, Sussex, and Humberside and spent nine years working for the Association of County Councils. He said it was the challenge of steering a new authority which prompted his move from Wychavon. Bath & North East Somerset UA will provide services currently controlled by Avon, Bath and Wandsdyke councils and Mr du Sautoy will be responsible for managing an annual budget of £185m for a population of 158,000. He said: ‘The opportunity of working in a new unitary system in Bath is like a breath of fresh air. I am looking forward to the challenge and I believe this new council has the potential to be the best in the country.’
